About the Book

In Stacey Kennedy’s steamy paranormal romance novel, a rookie guardian sworn to combat the undead risks life and love in a world of violence, witchcraft, and seduction.

Nexi Jones has lost her family, she’s been stripped of her guardian duties, and she’s still learning the ins and outs of white magic. At least she has Kyden, the smoldering hot elite guardian who’s been there for her every step of the way. But just as Nexi completes her training, tragedy strikes the Otherworld when a fellow guardian is murdered by a group of rogue vampires. Ready or not, she and Kyden trek into the Earthworld to hunt down a killer—and Nexi alone will be put to the ultimate test.

Although Kyden knows that Nexi must fight her own battles, his guardian instincts are raging as he struggles to keep her close. The ruthlessness of these vampires is like nothing he’s ever seen. And at their helm is the Black Witch Astoria, a demon with one burning desire: to shed Nexi’s blood in the name of vengeance. What troubles Kyden even more, though, is the warlock who covets Nexi’s heart. Let the devil do his worst . . . all Kyden can do is love and protect Nexi until his last breath.

A glimpse inside Witches Be Burned:

Excerpt:

Arms crossed, and with a glare firmly fixed on her face, Nexi said, “We. You do mean if we need him on the case, right?”

Kyden stiffened before he turned around. His light brown hair hung messily over his forehead, and his tanned skin gleamed under the light coming from the porch light. Standing a good two heads above her, he pressed all her on buttons. This man was gorgeous—perhaps not classically beautiful, but more rough and edgy. Honed cheekbones, perfect lips, squared chin, he had that charm that bedazzled women. His light emerald eyes that always sent heat through her blazed in a way that might scare a weaker guardian. “You don’t need to be here. Go home.”

Wow. Aren’t I the luckiest gal in the world?” she retorted with a loud snort. “You are such a romantic.”

Alazar laughed.

Kyden didn’t.

His frown was fierce, as he crossed his arms over his squared chest. Nexi boldly inspected his delicious high pecs, noting how she wouldn’t mind tracing her tongue over them. She slowly lifted her eyes when he added in a steely voice, “We’ve got this handled. There is no reason for you to be here.” One determined brow lifted. “Besides, as the Elite Guardian, it is in my right to force you to go home.”

Nexi sighed, refusing to lose the staring contest. This issue between them wouldn’t go away. She knew that, and she also knew she had to lay the smack down soon. Yes, only three months had passed since Lazarus had nearly killed them, but enough was enough. If the Council thought she was ready to return to her job, then she was.

Nuff said.

Ignoring Kyden’s dismay, she turned to Alazar. “What do we have?”

Newly made vampire gone rogue,” Alazar replied, glancing between her and Kyden.

She responded to his clear unease with a smirk. “Well, now, don’t you know, rogue vampires are my specialty.”

A specialty she suspected Kyden wished she didn’t have. He might want her safe and protected in the Otherworld, but she needed a damn purpose to keep moving forward. Most of all, she needed to stop thinking of everyone she lost at the hands of an evil vampire and wishing she could somehow bring them back.

Six months ago, after her mortal family had been murdered, she’d left her human life behind to work for the Council’s Guard—which was fine and she accepted it. But Kyden needed to accept it, too.

Are we going, then?” Alazar asked tightly, staring solely at the guardian in front of Nexi, exuding irritation.

She’d had enough of Kyden’s protectiveness. “Which way?” Alazar pointed to the left, and Nexi started walking. “See, this is us going.”

Kyden cursed.

She held back her chuckle and then embraced the silence that fell between them as they strode along Salt Lake City’s dark and dreary streets. Alazar eventually punched forward, leading the way, still in human form, sniffing the air. The only time a werewolf tracker shifted into his fur was when the scent was weak. Since Alazar hadn’t, that meant there was a good chance they’d find this vampire.

This part of the city was likely full of activity during daylight hours, but being two in the morning, the roads were empty, with a few cars passing. Nexi decided then and there that she preferred the quiet. It meant innocent humans were safe. Though if a mortal were to pass by them right now, the human’s eye wouldn’t see the leather kilts and swords on their backs, they’d see typical earthly clothes. Only supernaturals saw their true forms due to a magical glamour placed on their clothing.

With each and every step, she shoved the rest of the annoyance away. Kyden might object to her being there, but he wasn’t stopping it, either. And she knew part of his objection was because she was so new to his world. She had been living as a human just a short time ago. Nexi had already had one vampire targeting her because of her uniqueness and the rich power in her blood. And more than likely she’d probably have to face that all over again.

Alazar darted down a few more streets before he finally stopped. He pointed to a building on his right. “The vamp’s scent is strong in there. I suspect he’s inside.”

Nexi looked at the Starbucks that had been long closed for the night. “He’s inside the coffee shop?”

I believe so.” Alazar angled his head back and took a deep sniff of the dry air. “But I suspect that”—he looked to the sidewalk—“he’s in a basement. His scent is beneath us.”

Kyden groaned.

Nexi understood completely—if they entered the building, the alarms would sound. Mortal cops getting into the mix of a vampire in the throes of bloodlust was bad news.

He must’ve gotten in somehow without setting off the security system,” Kyden said, voice tight, indicating his annoyance at Nexi remained. “Let’s find out where and go in the same way.”

Awesome plan,” Nexi said, disregarding Kyden’s gruffness. She wouldn’t tiptoe around this problem anymore.

Kyden’s long-suffering sigh slid through the dark night.

Alazar’s mouth twitched, clearly hiding his smile. “Call me if you need anything.” He retreated  down the street in the opposite direction.

Nexi turned to Kyden and grinned, eyeing her sexy beast of a man, spotting the flares of irritation in his bedroom eyes. She knew he wasn’t angry with her, but was fearful of losing her. Her heart warmed, of course it did, but even if their love was strong and solid, that didn’t mean she wouldn’t do her job.

Ready?” she asked.

I’m not sure how I can manage to both love and hate your willfulness, but that seems to be the case.” Kyden’s mouth flattened. “Let’s go.”

She blew him a kiss for that one.

[Review] HEX by Mackenzie McGuire

~ HEX by Mackenzie McGuire ~

Genre: YA, Mystery

Pub Date: June 20, 2015

Series: Saxton Academy Series

Source: Book provided by Author

Synopsis:

I’m Reece. A month ago I died along with my two best friends in a car crash. Obviously, my death didn’t last long. Since then, I hear voices and the nightmares – don’t even get me started. I just wanted to be normal. That meant leaving my lux L.A. life for the gothic, and icy, Saxton Academy in the mountains of Vermont. Away from the tabloids, I had a plan to get my life together. But that just isn’t possible. Thanks to hotties Eli McKinnon and Carden McDowell I discovered my life is a lie. They want to help me reach my potential. I just want to be a regular girl. But darkness is coming, and if I want to stay alive, I may not have a choice.

~ My Review ~

I liked this book and me giving it 4 stars says a lot because I’m normally not into book about witches.

I liked Reece and I could totally see how she had some problems with catching up, considering she goes to a new school, finds some new friends and some other more supernatural problems.

The only “problem” I had with it was that I thought the relationship between the character progressed kind of too fast and in contrast the story was sometimes too slow for my taste.

But all in all it was a light and enjoyable read. 🙂

Rating: 4 stars ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶

“Waiting On” Wednesday #1

a12c9-new2bwow

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill from Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

I haven’t done a post like this for a long time, but I felt like writing one today. Also I will start the count anew

So this week I’m waiting for not only one, but two books 😉 I’m really uncertain with which I will start first next week, because that’s a really tough choice :/

#1: A Sorceress Of His Own by Dianne Duvall

Publication Date: June 02

Synopsis:

From the New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Immortal Guardians series comes an enchanting new series full of romance, danger, and loyalty: The Gifted Ones

Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.

For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon’s side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed–or cursed–with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father.

All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon’s life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything–even the wrath of his king–to be with her.

#2: Shards Of Hope by Nalini Singh

Publication Date: June 02

Synopsis:

The “smoldering heat, epic romance, and awesome action” of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as two Arrows find themselves caught in a chilling conspiracy that spans all three races…

Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.

And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what.

This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.

TT #37 / FTPI #25

I decided to combine the Teaser Tuesday, hosted by MizB from A Daily Rhythm, with the First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, hosted by Bibliophile By the Sea.

Today I decided to feature Frigid by J.Lynn AKA Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opening:

Sydney

I was in love with my best friend.
And it could be worse, I guessed. I could have been in love with a male stripper or a drug addict. Kyler Quinn was neither of those things. Although he could easily be passed off as a male stripper with those jaw-dropping good looks and messy brown hair, and he was as addictive as any drug out there.

Teaser from 5%

“Parents divorced a few years back, so I go between houses.”
I hadn’t known that. “Sorry to hear that.”

Ten Books I Plan To Have In My Beach Bag This Summer

I’m more like a mood reader, but I’m 100% positive I will read the following books in the summer.
(Click on the tiny covers to be guided to GoodReads)

Every Last Breath by Jennifer L. Armentrout
It’s the last in the Dark Elements series and I just need to know how it will all end and who Layla will choose. Let it be Roth, otherwise I’m going to hit something.

Shards Of Hope by Nalini Singh
I have to confess I’m not really prone of those Psy + Psy constellations, I want my Psy + changeling couples back, but I’m going to read this one anyway. Did you know this is probably the longest series I have ever read. With Shards Of Hope it reached 13 books.

Shadow Strikes by Dianne Duvall
I’m so going to devour this. I just loved every book of this series till now and I don’t see that streak breaking. F-U-N ! … Now the Spongebob song is stuck inside my head…

A Sorceress of His Own by Dianne Duvall
This is the first in a new series of Miss Duvall. I’m kind of wary when it comes to historicals, but I will give it a try, because I love her other series. And I’m always trying to find new genres for me, because just PNR and UF gets boring with some time.

Burned by Darkness by Alexandra Ivy
This is a brand-new series by Alexandra Ivy and it will feature dragons, so I’m delving into a kind-of-new supernatural theme for me. The only dragons I have ever read about are the ones from the Eragon series.

Archangel’s Enigma by Nalini Singh
This book will be about Naasir and I really need to read this, because I must find out what Naasir is. Also that guy is adorable … in his be-careful-when-you-touch-him-otherwise-he-will-bite-of-your-hand kind of way. I’m wondering who will be his match.

Deal With the Devil by Cynthia Eden
A season list without a Cynthia Eden books wouldn’t be a list of mine, so here it is 😉 It’s the fourth book of the Purgatory series and I can’t wait to see who Eric Pate’s woman will be. I hope she lets him work a lot before she gives in.

Like I said I’m more like a mood reader, so I will stop here now. 🙂

Ten Books I Want You To Try 05/19/15

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke And Bookish.
For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

Ten Authors I want you to try

Ok, this week’s episode of TTT was a freebie and I’m generally bad at coming up with a theme myself. So Ten Books I Want You To Read was the best thing I could come up with.

1. Carrots by Colleen Helme: I found this book completely by accident. It’s a woman, named Shelby, who was shot in the head and now has the awesome ability to read minds. Also she gets into a lot of dangerous situation and the books are just so funny. And … Ramos is my favourite. He’s just … *sigh*
2. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Found this by accident, too, and I was in love with this after the few first pages. Because, hello? A girl that is a blogger like me (she actually inspired me to start this blog) and hot guys, also … Aliens? Totally sold.
3. My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent: Let me be honest with you, I wasn’t completely sure about this one, but after I’ve read the second one (my edition was a 2-in-1 book) I was hooked and read the whole series in a week.
4. First Grave On The Right by Darynda Jones: I won this book in a giveaway and I loved it. Charley, the main character, is my favourite kind of character. She’s sarcastic, funny, can see ghosts and she has this weird habit of naming her furniture.
5. Last Wolf Standing by Rhyannon Byrd: I actually started with the fourth book in series, but I liked it so much, I just had to read the other ones, too. Because, come on! Hot male alphas and women, who won’t take the shit the guys through on them.
6. Hotter After Midnight by Cynthia Eden: It was the every first book by Cynthia Eden I’ve read and every other book by her was just as good.
7. Show No Mercy by Cindy Gerard: I have this weird obsession with Black Ops guys and if you love action-filled books with a romance try it.
8. One Night Of Sin by Elle Kennedy: Hot MMA-fighter who liked to talk dirty, what else to say?

I just noticed I forget my two favourite of all time authors! Bad me.

9. Slave To Sensation by Nalini Singh: I love the world-building, the characters, the humor, just everything.
10. Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall: The characters are just like a big family. Love them all to death.
