[Review] Mechanic by Alexa Riley

About the book

Mechanic
(Breeding #2)
Alexa Riley
ebook, 175 pages
Publication Date: November 6th 2015
ASIN: B017OZY752

Everything was fine until that innocent little rich girl walked into my garage. Since the second I laid my eyes on her, all I’ve wanted to do is get my dirty hands on her pure body.

There’s one minor obstacle standing in my way, but I’ve got a plan. All I’ve got to do is claim her, and she’ll be mine forever.

Warning: This book is over-the-top, insta-love. There’s nothing but steamy scenes, babies trying to be made, and an obsessed bearded alpha hero claiming a virgin who will be his forever. If you want it hot and dirty, this is it!

*whispers* There’s a sweet smutty surprise at the end!

reviewThis was my first Alexa Riley book and I won’t touch anymore of her books. Not even for money.

Let me tell you right now that I don’t like books about breeding, but I gave this one a chance anyway because a lot of my Goodreads friends like it and I thought that it couldn’t be that bad (also it was for free). Boy, was I wrong. I don’t even know how I finished it – or the little extra at the end. I have no idea how I made it through all of the 175 pages of Mechanic. It was so bad. I wish I could go to the past and knock some sense into my past self.

Warning: This book is over-the-top, insta-love. There’s nothing but steamy scenes, babies trying to be made, and an obsessed bearded alpha hero claiming a virgin who will be his forever.

The synopsis pretty much says what this book is about and though those things above favour into the factor of me ending up not liking it, those weren’t the main problems I had with Mechanic.

I had three even bigger problems. Can you believe it? I hated something more than it being a insta-love.

#1: Where the heck was the story? I know the synopsis says “nothing but steamy scenes”, but how about just a little bit of story? They have absolutely no ground to why they fall in love with each other, not even for an insta-love. I don’t understand their relationship.

#2: The first time they meet the hero clearly nearly rapes her. You can’t tell me otherwise! And after running out out from him, the heroine comes back around and just let’s him do what he wants. I can’t deal with so much stupidity.

#3: The hero Paine himself. He was not hot, not sexy or anything you can associate with those words. No, he was a jerk, dick, douchebag and as much other words you and I can think of. He didn’t care for…. what’shernameagain? *looks it up* Right, Penelope…. I did NOT like him nor her. Not one bit.

The only positive thing I can say about this book is that it’s quite short (thank god) and the sex scenes were kind of tolerable.

Rating: 1,5 stars

About the authorAlexa Riley is two sassy friends who got together and wrote some dirty books. They are both married moms of two who love football, donuts, and obsessed book heroes.

They specialize in insta-love, over-the-top, sweet, and cheesy love stories that don’t take all year to read. If you want something SAFE, short, and always with a happily ever after, then Alexa Riley is for you!

ASIN: B01F43C9GK

Don’t make the devil angry…

Luke Thorne loves having one hell of a good time. As the ruler of every dark creature to walk the earth, he certainly has more than a bit of a bad side. He lives for danger and isn’t the type to lose his heart—mostly because he doesn’t have one. Then she walks into his life.

Mina James is seduction in the flesh, a perfect temptation that the devil himself couldn’t pass up. Too late, Luke realizes he’s let a real siren into his life, a woman who is bent on using his dark powers to free herself from hidden enemies. Since Luke isn’t the type of man to be used, he should walk away from her, but…something about Mina draws him close.

Soon he’s realizing that she isn’t who she appears to be. Not dark and cold, but burning red hot. Mina is a woman fighting for her life—and the Lord of the Dark suddenly finds himself in an unlikely role…hero. Luke isn’t going to let her enemies destroy Mina. He will fight heaven and hell to keep her. But in the end, the secrets they both carry may just rip apart a love that should never have been…

There are Bad Things in the world…very, very bad. Are you ready for them?

review~ Book provided by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion

Let me start this review off with saying that I am absolutely in love with this cover. I can’t even describe why exactly. If I had a book shelf I would totally get The Devil In Disguise as a paperback just to showcased the cover on it.

Then I’m so glad Cynthia Eden is finally back in the paranormal romance world. I wasn’t that impressed by her last few suspense romances. Also I really like the take she took with these books. Instead on the good paranormal creatures, she decided to go with the bad ones. Though I have to say, sorry but they weren’t that bad, at least not the creatures.

The characters were bad/evil (whatever you want to call it) for the first half, but I felt like they lost some of their badness in the latter half. Note: I said some, not all of it ;). Nonetheless I still liked them all a lot and I really liked Luke’s attitude and Mina for being so scared of her bad flaws. Hilarious.

My favourite character though: Leo, Luke’s twin. I can’t really put my finger on the why, but I liked him the most and would like to see a book about him in the near future. Also Luke’s two best friends need books. The next one will be Julien’s. Yay! Can’t wait for it to come out in September.

I don’t know if I still have to say anything about Cynthia Eden’s writing style. I’m a sucker for her books, therefore I like her writing style – a lot.

[Review] Paper Princess by Erin Watt

About the bookPaper Princess
(The Royals #1)
by Erin Watt
ebook, 370 pages
Publication Date: April 26th 2016
ASIN: B01DT9ZWNI

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.

These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor—a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

Reed doesn’t want her. He says she doesn’t belong with the Royals.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

reviewLet me start this review off with saying: I freaking love Ella! She knows that life is hard, is sassy, uses a good dose of sarcasm and doesn’t back down when some jerk *cough* Reed *cough* tries to command her life. I adore her and her strength.

Now Reed… Reed is another story. Him I wanted to hit so hard with a shovel that he could only see stars for weeks. I hope he fixes the mess he made in the next book. I still love him though, but don’t let him know that. He’s doesn’t need me to stroke his ego anymore 😉

This whole Royal family is crazy, but I kind of ended up liking them all. They were funny and after they warmed up to Ella they were a really good family. Love the five brothers and can’t wait to read more about them.

The writing style of Paper Princess was really good. In fact, I read this book in on sitting, because I couldn’t stop. I was hooked to the pages. Also that cover! It’s really beautiful, even though it’s kind of plain (and I mean that in a good way). I love it.

Now if July could hurry up and be here. I think I can’t wait any longer for the next one after that mean cliffhanger. Give me more!

review
I already knew how Phantom Embrace would end, since I read the other books in the Immortal Guardians series, but this novella makes the end of Night Unbound so much more bearable.
The relationship between Yuri and Cat was cute and heartbreaking and I kind of hope to hear from those two again in a later Immortal Guardians book, but I’m not sure if it will actual happen. Only time can tell. Make it happen, Dianne!

I can’t wait to read more of the immortal guardians and this world.

~ This novella can – at least in my opinion – be read as a standalone ~

Dianne: Thank you, Emalie, for helping me celebrate the release of my Immortal Guardians novella PHANTOM EMBRACE. I’m so happy to be here at Bookgatherer.

It’s a pleasure having you here!! Now starting with the Q&A…

When did you get the idea to match Cat and Yuri?

Dianne: I have wanted to give Cat her own story ever since I wrote the first book in the series, DARKNESS DAWNS. But I didn’t find the right hero for her until I wrote the fifth book, NIGHT UNBOUND. After I finished that one, I knew Yuri was the perfect hero for her. And I really wanted Yuri to have his own HEA.

I’m quite sure I’m not the only one wondering, but now that Yuri and Cat have found their happily-ever-after will we be seeing them again?

Dianne: You definitely aren’t the only one wondering. Normally I don’t like saying much about future books, but so many have asked me that I’ll say . . . Yes, you’ll see Yuri and Cat again. I just won’t say when or where.

How did you feel when you hit the end of Phantom Embrace?

Dianne: I felt great. Cat’s long years of loneliness ended with her finally getting the HEA I’ve been wanting to give her. And Yuri found the love for which he has been waiting centuries. After all that happened in the last book, that was important to me.

Did you have a favorite song or even a playlist while writing Phantom Embrace that you would like to share with us?

Dianne: I admit to being partial to Disturbed’s Down With the Sickness, since the immortals and vampires in my series gain their superior speed, strength, and heightened senses from a rare symbiotic virus that infects them. But I generally prefer to write in quiet.

Who is your favorite character out of all of your books – yes, I’m aware that’s like picking your favorite child.

Dianne: That is such a hard question to answer! But if I absolutely have to choose a favorite, it’s Seth. Seth is the immensely powerful leader of the Immortal Guardians. He works so hard to provide the other immortals with a warm family environment, and sacrifices so much for them. And Seth has been with me for a very long time. I first created him years ago for A SORCERESS OF HIS OWN (the first book in The Gifted Ones series). His presence in that one (and that of Alyssa, the heroine) fired my imagination and inspired many of the what-ifs that led me to create my Immortal Guardians series. So without Seth, neither of my series would exist . . . which is also why I can’t wait to give him his own book.

[Review] Roommates by Hazel Kelly

About the book

Roommates
(Stand-Alone)
Hazel Kelly
366 pages, ebook
Publication date: May 31st 2016
ASIN: B01GGOOWJI

Ethan Fitzell has been avoiding his stepsister Jenny since their parents got married, but when she shows up at his apartment uninvited, he’s forced to face the fact that her absence has only made his heart grow fonder…

Jenny
I always liked him.

But when our parents got married, things got confused. As if being a teenager isn’t confusing enough.

All I knew was that the feelings I had for him weren’t okay.

I’ll never forget the anxiety I felt the night I ran into him at a party that had gotten out of control.

I saw him standing around with the popular kids as soon as I walked in the door.

And he saw me, too. He always saw me. It was talking to me that he avoided.

I watched his buddy spin an empty wine bottle on the butcher block while my friend Brandi rummaged in her oversized purse for the two bottles of hard lemonade her older sister gave us.

When the spinning bottle stopped, I realized everyone was staring at me.

“Looks like you’ve gotta kiss Jen,” some jock said to Ethan.

I felt the color drain from my face, taking the moisture in my mouth with it as a suffocating panic grew in my chest. I was going to be found out.

Ethan laughed it off. “Yeah, that’s not happening. She’s my sister.”

“Not really, though,” his buddy insisted.

The eruption of laughter and jeering sounds made the dim kitchen feel like a jungle full of predators, and I was sure my cheeks were going to burst into flames.

“Don’t be stupid,” Ethan said, tilting a can of beer over his mouth.

When his friend spun the bottle again, Ethan glanced back at me one more time and wiped the back of his hand across his lips.

I’ve been wondering what it would be like to kiss him ever since.

**Author’s note: This is a full-length, standalone romance novel with no cliffhanger and no cheating. It is intended for a mature audience and has an ending that will leave you smiling so hard it hurts.

review~ Book provided by the author in exchange for my honest opinion

I wanted to write this review right when I got home, but I got distracted by the Germany vs. North-Ireland game. Anyway, here it is 😉

Stepbrother romances are either a hit or a miss for me. Either they are too cliché-ridden and are only focusing on the sex scenes or they are sweet and actually focusing on the relationship. Roommates was the later.

I liked Roommates a lot. Both, Ethan and Jenny, were likeable characters and I loved how they encouraged each other to pursue their dreams. They were there for each other and i really liked their first kiss. I could nearly see the sparks between them. I also loved the struggle they had with their feelings for each other. I’m always not a big fan of stepsibling books where they are like “we are stepsiblings? Screw this. Let’s screw.” In Roommates they actually needed years – they knew each other since their teenage years – to finally find together. The whole story was pretty adorable and funny. And while some people might think that the first sex scene at 70% was a bit late, I thought it fit the story and the relationship development between Ethan and Jenny.

The writing style of Hazel Kelly was good as well, the only thing that was a bit annoying sometimes was that she wrote dialogue without any indication who was talking. And I got lost a few times in these dialogues, but that was probably my own fault. I had this craving for chocolate and had to put away my Kindle to get some, after coming back I forgot who talked last. My short-term memory is like a sieve, everything falls through 😉

I’m going to check out some of Hazel’s other books.

St. Martin’s Griffin
Publication Date: June 28th 2016
ASIN: B0191K3GVY

As a Part-time PI and fulltime grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one malevolent god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension.

There’s just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago. Can the Razer, a god of absolute death and destruction, change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiances lie with his brothers?

Those are just a few of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl running for her life, an innocent man who’s been charged with murder, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, and Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved. If not, well…

‘When the veil fell, any half bloods not strong enough to withstand Chaos were torn apart. Some, like me and my brother, survived The Fall. Most did not.

A Son Of Carver
Carver High #2)
by Haven Francis

ASIN: B01E0LMB2O

Sometimes the best version of yourself is the one you can only see through someone else’s eyes. But what happens when those eyes belong to the one person you don’t want them to?

Thanks to her father’s affair and her parent’s resulting separation, Presley Knox has been ripped from her life in California and dropped into an abyss in the middle of Georgia. With her alternative looks and creative spirit, trying to find her place in a sea of jocks and cheerleaders is hard, but doing it while living with her cousin who belittles her every chance she gets is almost impossible. There is one person in Carver who embodies everything Presley hates about her new life and she can’t help but use him as the outlet for all of her frustrations.

Nash Carter’s bad boy image isn’t a façade; he drinks too much, sleeps around, makes his money street racing and has zero plans for his future beyond living a rowdy life with his likeminded dad and older brother. His good looks, cut body and popularity have always gotten him anything and anyone he’s ever wanted. That is until Presley Knox showed up at Carver High.

Nash knows to steer clear of Presley and her sharp tongue that’s always aimed at him. But that becomes impossible when they’re paired together for a semester-long photography assignment that promises to push them into the depths of each other’s personal lives. In order to survive the semester, Nash implements a new strategy: get the one girl who’s immune to his charm to change her mind about him.

With Nash’s unwavering pursuit to know everything about her, and with the nagging voice inside her head that’s insisting there’s more to him than she’s letting herself see, Presley struggles to keep her wall firmly in place. When it slowly begins to crumble, Nash wonders if he should have kept his distance after all because the girl that’s been hiding under Presley’s hard shell is breaking his heart wide open.

Nash has been a lot of things to a lot of girls, but Presley’s the only one he’s ever wanted to shelter and protect. But how is he going to do that when he knows she’s right to keep their friendship a secret in order to protect herself from him?

Due to mature language and content, A Son of Carver is intended for readers 17+. It can be read as a standalone or as book two in the Carver High series.

[Review] Sixty Five Hours by N.R. Walker

About the book

Sixty Five Hours
(Sixty Five Hours #1)
by N.R. Walker

ebook, 192 pages
Publication: November 1st 2012
ASIN:B012UQUQXC

Cameron Fletcher and Lucas Hensley are advertising executives who have Sixty Five Hours to pull together the campaign of their careers.

Sixty Five Hours to get along. Sixty Five Hours to not kill each other. Sixty Five Hours to fall in love.

reviewI found this one on my Kindle (apparently I bought it when it was on sale some time ago – I think it even still is?) and I really, really liked it. I read it in on sitting. I kind of want to have those pair of socks Cameron has. Sometimes Lucas foot fetish was a bit much for me, but it was hilarious nonetheless. Sometimes the characters felt a bit too smooth for me, but it was still a perfect read for a lazy sunday.

Sixty Five Hours was funny, emotional and addicting. I will definitely be checking out some more books of this author. 🙂

Rating: 4 stars

About the authorN.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things…but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since…
