[Review] The Boyfriend Bet by Chris Cannon

About the book

The Boyfriend Bet
(Boyfriend Chronicles #2)
by Chris Cannon

ebook, 240 pages
Publication Date: August 22nd 2016 by Entangled: Crush

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains multiple PDAs, after-school detentions, and gambling on the side. Warning: betting on a boyfriend is bad for your health.

Zoe Cain knows that Grant Evertide is way out of her league. So naturally, she kisses him. Out of spite. Not only is Grant her brother’s number-one nemesis, but he has zero interest in being tied down to one girl. She’s shocked—and secretly thrilled—when they start spending more time together.

Zoe’s brother claims Grant is trying to make her his “Ringer,” an oh-so-charming tradition where a popular guy dates a non-popular girl until he hooks up with her, then dumps her. Zoe threatens to neuter Grant with hedge clippers if he’s lying but Grant swears he isn’t trying to trick her. Still, that doesn’t mean Grant is the commitment type—even if winning a bet is on the line.

review~ Book provided by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion

The Boyfriend Bet was the first book by Chris Cannon I’ve read. In fact before reading it I haven’t even heard of Chris Cannon.

I was really excited when I started The Boyfriend Bet. The synopsis sounded promising and the first two-three chapters where actually interesting, but then I noticed how whiney both the main characters were. Zoe was constantly like He won’t like me, because someone else is way prettier and Grant was whining about Zoe being high maintenance, but that he needed someone with low and in all he didn’t even wants a girlfriend.

I got annoyed by these two pretty quick.

Also the thing with Delia, Zoe’s best friend, and Aiden, Grant’s best friend, was totally unnecessary for the story. I didn’t feel any chemistry between any of the characters. Maybe that would come to a later point in the book and I decided to quit to early, but I want my chemistry to be there from an early point in the book. By 31% there still wasn’t any and my dislike for the characters just grew.

So I decided to stop. I know I probably sound like a bitch, but if a book can’t grab me from the very start or at least after 5 chapters in, then I won’t hope for the best.

The writing style was ok though and I’m sure if it weren’t for the characters I would have been able to finish it. Maybe I will give it a try again in a few month. Who knows, tastes do change after all, maybe I will like it then.

I’m sure someone will love this book more than I did. Maybe I just missed a deeper connection to the characters.

[Review] Shadow Falling by Rebecca Zanetti

About the book

Shadow Falling
(The Scorpius Syndrome #2)
by Rebecca Zanetti

Publication Date: August 30th 2016 by Zebra

Before the Scorpius Syndrome tore through North America and nearly wiped out the population, Vivienne Wellington was the FBI’s best profiler. The bacteria got her anyway. But she survived. She recovered. And when she woke up from a drug-nightmare of captivity, her skills as a hunter of men had gone from merely brilliant to full-on uncanny. Her mysterious rescuer wants her to put them to the test. But no matter how tempting he is, with his angel’s eyes and devil’s tongue, Vinnie knows she shouldn’t trust him.

If the FBI were still around they would rate Raze Shadow as one of the bad guys. His military training can’t wipe out his association with the Mercenaries, the most feared gang in a thousand miles. His loyalties are compromised. He won’t even tell Vinnie his real name. But there’s no FBI in the new America of fear and firepower, only instinct and risk.

And the way his arms wrap around Vinnie tells its own story. Whatever else Raze is concealing, he can’t hide his desire . . .

review~ Book provided by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion

I admit I wasn’t totally convinced after reading Mercury Striking, book one in this series, but I loved the world building enough to request Shadow Falling. And I liked it a lot better than book one. The world building was still great and I can’t wait to see how the fight with the bacterium will go on in the next books.

But the real reason why I liked Shadow Falling was this one:

First, Raze was much more likeable than Jax. Second, Vivienne was much more likeable than Lynne. Those two as a couple made a lot more sense than Jax and Lynne. I really, really liked Raze and Vivienne together.

Also I can’t wait to see what will happen with Sami and Tace, also I think Maureen and Greyson would make a good couple. I can’t wait to see what more Rebecca Zanetti has up her sleeve.

I followed her movements, which then forced me to take a good look at her.
She had come in with a gray hoodie, the one she’d stolen from me the first time
she beat the crap out of me in a fight. In my defense, I wasn’t able to really hit
her because she was a girl. I learned soon after that how wrong I was; she was
tougher than most guys I knew. She boggled my mind for so many reasons.
Right now, though, she wore it over a black short skirt, tights, and boots with
three-inch heels. A belt with a big, diamond square buckle hugged her waist.
How she made it look stylish, I had no clue.
“Does that really go together?”
I asked, pointing at her outfit.
“Not really, but it’s cold.”
She smiled, and proceeded to open the belt and take off the hoodie. Underneath it, I found out what an hourglass figure truly looked like. She wasn’t too skinny; she had meat on her, but it was in pretty good proportions. Her black, very tight, long-sleeved top was immediately adorned with the belt she’d taken off, accenting her tiny waist. And her hair?
Well, she even had it loose. It was long and silky. I’d always thought of her as my sister, but this chick didn’t look like she should be anyone’s sister. She sat down next to me.
“What’d you do to your hair? And are you wearing makeup?”
Her brows creased.
“Don’t make fun of me.”
“Well, it looks funny. You —”
I stopped at the look of murder that crept in her eyes.
“It looks nice, it’s just different. I didn’t think you liked being girly.”
“I’m a girl. How can I not be girly?”
“You know what I mean; you are more of a tomboy.”
“That was because I was still trying to learn how to be out in the field and use my powers. Now that I know how, I think it’s perfectly fine to dress up if I want to.”
“Right. Come on, you only dress up for missions if you have to. Like at the club,” I said, laughing. “Even in training you were always more boyish.”
“I was not.”
She frowned.
“Yes, you were. How did you even learn to put on make up? You probably practiced all weekend —”
I saw her fist coming at my face and teleported right on time. Unfortunately, Ryan fell over. I went to pick her up but she stopped
me. Shit. I’d pissed her off real bad. If I was not mistaken, her blue eyes were a bit teary.
“You are an ass.”
“Dude, I’m sorry. I was just kidding. I’m not used to seeing you as a girl,”
I said, and dashed to the door. Man, that was perfect timing on Chris’s part to
ring the bell.
“Well, get used to it. And stop making fun of me or I’ll give your face some scars to match your brother’s.”
“That’s harsh. Jeez,” I said, rubbing my face.
Chris walked in at the same time, and said, “Hey, you look pretty, Ry.”
“Don’t be a prick,” she said and got up. “We have to go.”
“I’m not,” he said frowning. “What’s up with her?” he asked me in a whisper as we followed her.
“It’s not you. I made fun of her before, so now she is all defensive, like it’s our fault she suddenly decided to be a girl.”
“She looks nice as a girl,” Chris said, checking her out walking down the hallway.
I shrugged.
“I guess. But she’s the one who always made fun of them and now she’s all dressed up. Look at her skirt, too tight for her own good — what are you doing? Stop staring at her. She’s going to melt your eyes if you don’t stop.”
“I’ll make her forget,” he said with a grin. “You and your hypnosis. Do you ever confront anything head on, or do you always modify your way out?”
“Modify my way out. Why deal with crap if I don’t have to?” He shrugged.
“Good thing you’d never do that to me,” I said to Chris. “Wait, what was
that look? Dude, that would be very un-bro-like!”
“It would be.”
Chris smiled, and hurried out behind Ryan.

Ramsay’s voice was quiet behind her, peaceful, and yet a little sad. “My dad brought me here when I was little. The only time I remember ever having him to myself. Eryx and I had fought about something, a worse blow up than normal. Dad thought me having a place to go and gather my thoughts might be in the best interest of the whole castle.”

Trinity paced her breathing and kept her eyes locked on the majestic sun as it tipped into the teal water. She could see this sight tomorrow, or the day after, but the story bubbling up from Ramsay’s memory was huge. The intensity of it crackled and snapped around her.

Aside from Eryx, I’ve never brought anyone here, and even he has only been a time or two.” He pulled in a slow breath. “It was the only thing I had of my dad I didn’t have to share with anyone else.” His fingers tightened on her shoulders. “I wanted to share it with you.”

Honest to God, a battering ram couldn’t have impacted her senses more than his simple, heart-felt gift. She was dumbfounded. Too stunned and humbled to formulate even the basest response.

Look at it, Trinity. That sunset is the same impression you made on me the first time I saw you. Powerful. Colorful. Bright and warm.” He slid his hands around her waist and wrapped her up tight, his mouth at her ear. “Every time I see or think of you, this is what fills me.”

She tried to turn, her body and senses clamoring for eye contact. To anchor herself in his steel-gray eyes.

He stopped her with a flex of his arms. “Not yet. I need you to watch it until it’s gone. To know that it’s the last sunset you’ll see without a mate. And know that the sunrise we watch tomorrow will be ours.”

[Review] Filthy English by Ilsa Madden-Mills

About the book

Filthy English
(English #2)
by Ilsa Madden-Mills

Publication Date: July 11th 2016

A smokin’ hot British player…
A jilted girl…
One night of mistaken identity…

Two weeks before her wedding, Remi Montague’s fiancé drops her faster than a drunken sorority girl in stilettos. Armed with her best friend and a bottle of tequila, she hops a plane to London to drown her sorrows before fall semester begins at Whitman University.

She didn’t plan on attending a masquerade party.

She sure didn’t plan on waking up next to the British bad boy who broke her heart three years ago—the devastatingly handsome and naked Dax Blay. Furthermore, she has no clue how they acquired matching tattoos.

Once back at Whitman together, they endeavor to pretend they never had their night of unbridled passion in London.

But that’s damn hard to do when you live in the same house…

One night. Two damaged hearts. The passion of a lifetime.

*A modern love story inspired by Romeo and Juliet*

f6c05-goodreads-buttonreview~ Book provided by the author in exchange for my honest opinion

I really, really liked Dirty English, the previous book and was devasted when I thought it would remain just a single book. You might be able to guess how happy I was when Isla Madden-Mills decided to write another book in the same setting and therefore making this into a series of stand-alones.

I really hope she will write a third book in this series about Spider *hint, hint*.

I really liked the development in the story of Dax and Remi, those little hints of Romeo and Juliet were cute. Thankfully it didn’t end the way it did in the original story. I have this love for guys with a british accent and while reading it I was picturing Dax with a Jason Statham voice, because have you heard the guy talk? Yum.

What I didn’t like though was the synopsis. It tells you pretty much what happens in the first 60% of the book since Dax and Remi get back to Whitmore pretty late in the book. They are for the most part in London, which I loved. Because London was a really cool town and I loved being there – in real life and I hope to visit it again.

Anyway, long talk short, this book was pretty awesome and I can’t wait for another one.

Could This Be Love?
(Cates Brothers #2)
by Lee Kilraine

ebook, 320 pages
Lyrical Shine
Publication Date: June 7th 2016
ISBN: 9781601836717

Everyone in Climax, North Carolina, knows the Cates brothers. But Sijan Cates is famous far beyond his quaint hometown–and when he comes back, he brings trouble with him…

Avery Danford urgently needs to get back in touch with her estranged family. If only she could get her picture in the papers, maybe they’d track her down…and what better way to accomplish that than to squeeze into the world’s tightest dress and cozy up to the world’s hottest actor, Sijan Cates? It’s a crazy idea, but it just might work. And though the former actress has sworn off Hollywood hunks, she’s got to admit this desperate measure might be a pleasure…

Scandal-plagued Sijan has come home for some peace and quiet–and to stay out of the tabloids. Then a woman claiming to be his number-one fan plants a hot kiss on him–in front of a pack of paparazzi. There’s only one way to protect his reputation: tell the world they’re engaged. It’s all just a show, as they use each other to get what they need. But in this sleepy Southern town, love stories have a way of coming true…

review~ Book generously provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion

I received this book through NetGalley some time ago and started it shortly after, but the first few pages couldn’t grab me, so I put it aside for later. Later sadly didn’t come for quite a while. I just needed some time and motivation to get myself to read more of it. Thankfully I did. After the initial boredom this book actually was pretty good.

It had some funny scenes, the two main characters, as well as the supportive characters, were really relatable and the romance was really sweet. I was totally rooting for Sijan and Avery. Sometimes the drama was a bit much, but I loved how all was solved in the end. Also this book as some plot holes, but they were minor enough for me, because they only regarded what was told to the press.

I’m normally not into books that deal with Hollywood and fame, but I have to be honest and say I solely requested this because of the cover. The cover is absolutely gorgeous. I know some people have something against people on the cover, but I actually like people on them, if it is nicely done, which is the case here.

Before Could This Be Love? I haven’t heard about Lee Kilraine, but I will be sure to check out her other work as well as her future books in the Cates brothers series. Also I hope for a certain someone to get a book.
