ebook, 303 pages
Publication Date: August 12th 2016
ASIN: B01IMIJLNI

Just back from Paris, Shelby barely has time to get over her jet lag before she is right back in the thick of things. Uncle Joey, the local mob boss, needs her help to find out what his son is hiding from him. Detective Harris, AKA Dimples, has an unsolved homicide on his hands, along with a missing engagement ring. Shelby’s husband, Chris, just got promoted to partner in his law firm, and she has yet to see his new office or meet his new secretary. Add to that the opportunity to purchase a beautiful home, and Shelby is racing from one thing to the next while trying to keep them all straight.

When a courier in Uncle Joey’s organization turns up dead, it’s up to Shelby and her mind-reading powers to find out who killed him and why. The house Shelby wants to buy has a few problems that go beyond the building code, and the murder she’s helping Dimples solve has ties to Chris’ law firm. Even using all of her skills, Shelby finds one hidden deception after another. And if she’s not careful, it might be the one she least expects that will kill her.

review~ Book generously provided by the author in exchange for my honest opinion

Can you believe this is the ninth Shelby Nichols book?! Nine books and I still love this series as much as I did when I first read Carrots five years ago.

I’m currently on summer break and I intended to read all my other review copies, but when Colleen offered me the chance of reading Hidden Deception I put everything else aside, grabbed some popcorn and enjoyed the show. By the way, thank you, Colleen!

It always amazes me how Shelby can, even though she can read minds, get in such a mess all the time and still be alive. A fun mess I have to clarify. Even after eight books, reading Shelby’s new adventure is for sure anything but boring. I laughed so much, sometimes I found myself shaking my kindle thinking “why, why, why, Shelby”. Shelby is such a magnet for trouble. Complicated situations are her forte. I don’t know how she juggles them all, but it’s fun to see her try.

Then there is her family. I love Shelby’s relationship with her husband. In fact I think this is the only series I’m reading where the main character started off in a commited relationship. I’m normally more of a “find and get together”-romance book type of reader, but with Shelby and Chris… let’s say, I’m jealous and I want such a good marriage myself someday in the future.

Shelby’s relationship with the mafia will – of course! – be mentioned in this review as well. Since book one I’ve been a fan of Ramos, hitman of the mafia, and I think that will never change, maybe should he somehow double-cross them all, but I doubt that will ever happen. In regards of Shelby’s relationship with Ramos… I love that Colleen never went down the road of Shelby with Ramos, meaning cheating on Chris, because those two definitely would have the potential for that. Big plus for staying away for that “twist” since I hate cheating in books.

Uncle Joey, head of the mafia and not really Shelby’s uncle, but she calls him that way, had to deal with a lot of problems in Hidden Deception and I liked that he appeared in a lot of scenes. Also he had to deal with some personal problems and I can’t wait to see how that works out in the future books. What those personal problems are, I can’t say without spoiling the previous books for you 😉

All these cases Shelby works on this time are interesting and I love how some of them are somehow connected or just helping Shelby to solve a different one. I enjoyed reading how she works together with Dimples, err…. Harris? Was that his real name? Shelby infected me with her way of only thinking of the Detective as Dimples.

I’m always wondering how Colleen can come up with these crazy ideas and how she keeps them all straight in her head. I know I would have lost my thread a long time ago. Kudos to you, Colleen!

Then can we talk about the cover of Hidden Deception? In fact, let’s talk about all the covers of the Shelby Nichols series. Aren’t they gorgeous? Did you know my favourite colour is orange? I especially loved the one of Hidden Deception, because orange ;). What I also love about the covers is the fact that they are always designed in relation to the stuff that happens in the book itself. I love that. Not many covers are that way. Never change them, do you hear me, Colleen? 🙂

Like always it was a joy to read another Shelby Nichols book and I can’t wait to see what chaos awaits Shelby in the next book. The downside of finishing Hidden Deception so earlier… I have to wait at least a year or so till the next one comes out. The tenth (!!!) one. We are moving to the double-digits. Exciting!!

Devious Minds
(A Shelby Nichols Adventure Series #8)
by Colleen Helme

Blurb:

It’s been almost a year since a near-fatal gunshot wound left Shelby Nichols with the ability to read minds. In that time she’s faced one problem after another. She’s been shot at, framed for murder, and targeted by a serial killer, just to name a few. Now she’s trying to help her lawyer husband win a murder trial that will enable him to become a partner in his law firm. Sounds easy, right? But nothing ever goes as planned when it comes to Shelby Nichols.

When special agent, Blake Beauchaine, shows up to collect a debt from Shelby, things get even more complicated, and Shelby is soon on her way to Paris. A routine meeting with a rogue agent reveals a sinister plot, putting Shelby into the cross-hairs of a known terrorist. Even worse, she doesn’t speak French, so it seems her mind-reading abilities won’t help her this time.

Things go from bad to downright dangerous for Shelby, especially since her usual guardians, Uncle Joey, and his hit-man, Ramos, are back in the states. Lost and on her own in the streets of Paris, can Shelby escape the cold-blooded killer in time to stop his devious plans, or will this be the end of the line for Shelby Nichols?

Character Interview

Billie Jo Payne: Joining me today is acclaimed private investigator, Shelby Nichols. Besides working as a paid consultant for the police, she has her own agency, and has been instrumental in solving several high-profile cases. Her latest involved a case that had gone unsolved for six years, which Shelby solved in a matter of days. She was also instrumental in helping me with my own investigation into the Attorney General’s office. How does she do it? What is her secret that gives her the edge over others who have tried and failed? Now is our chance to find out.

Thank you, Shelby, for agreeing to join me for an interview today. With your track record, you have become something of a phenomenon. Most people would agree that you have an uncanny ability to solve cases. Almost like a sixth sense. Is this something you were born with, or just grown into as you’ve honed your skills?

Shelby: Oh, I think you’re giving me more credit than I deserve here. I mean, most cases are solved after a lot of hard work and effort. I just happen to have a knack for figuring things out.

Billie: Is that why you got started in the PI business?

Shelby: Actually, I’m more of a consultant, but yes, I suppose that’s correct. I started helping the police after I was involved in a bank robbery. Since I was the only witness who could identify the bank robber, he tried to kill me, but as you can see, he didn’t succeed. While I was involved with that case, I spent a lot of time at the police station, and began helping them with a few little things here and there. That’s where I found out I had a ‘knack’ for it.

Billie: By ‘knack’ do you mean premonitions? That’s what you call it, isn’t it?

Shelby: Uh…yes…I’ve called it that…but I’d rather say it’s more like a sixth sense about things. People are more comfortable with that.

Billie: What was the first case you solved?

Shelby: Well…I think it was the time I helped the police with some stolen art.

Billie: That’s right. That’s when I first heard of you. Didn’t they put a plaque up in the museum with your name on it or something?

Shelby: Yes. It was a surprise to be honored that way.

Billie: (chuckles) Well, if you say so, but shouldn’t having premonitions make it kind of hard to surprise you? I mean…isn’t that what it means to have premonitions? I’m sure everyone would love to know how that works. Could you explain that to us?

Shelby: Um…I’ll try, but it’s pretty abstract.

Billie: That’s fine, just do your best. Anything you offer will be great.

Shelby: Hmm…okay, but once I get done, just remember you asked for it. Because…I had a premonition that you were going to put me on the spot like this, but I mostly blew it off because you’re a friend and all, but I should have followed my instincts and turned you down.

Billie: Huh! Well…I guess you were right about that, but if you ask me, that’s more like deductive reasoning. So what you’re saying is your premonitions are more like a gut reaction, or instincts. You don’t actually see into the future?

Shelby: No, I don’t at all. I probably should have called what I do something else, like intuition. Maybe that’s a better word for it.

Billie: Shelby! How can you say that? I think what you do is lots better than intuition. I mean, I’ve seen you in action. You know things that no one else could possibly figure out without some kind of extra-sensory perception.

Shelby: Oh…so now you’re calling it ESP?

Billie: That might make more sense.

Shelby: What?

Billie: Just think about it…there are times when you get into a lot of trouble. If you had a premonition that it would be trouble…why would you still do it? So maybe ESP is better.

Shelby: Geez, Billie Jo. I can see now that my premonition about coming here was right and I should have listened to it.

Billie: So you really don’t know when it’s a premonition? Don’t you get some kind of a little ‘zing’ or a vision? You told me once that sometimes you saw things in your mind that meant something about a case, if only you could figure out how it fit in the puzzle.

Shelby: I think I’m done with this interview. (unclips the microphone)

Billie: Wait…don’t go…I’ve still got questions…

Shelby: Bye.

Billie: Well, thanks for joining us everyone. Next time we’ll be interviewing Detective Harris from the police department…wait, what are you doing? You can’t take my microphone…I’m not done…

Excerpt

By the time we got to the sixth floor, I was eager to get out. Blake hid a smile at my nerves, and took off down the hall. He took out his keys and unlocked a door at the very end of the hall. As it swung open, my breath caught at the view from the window.

“Is that Notre-Dame?” I gasped.

He chuckled. “Actually, that’s The Hôtel de Ville where the city’s local administration is housed. The buildings just beyond those are on the Ile-de-la-Cité where Notre-Dame is located. In the distance, you can just make out the cathedral’s spire from here.”

“Oh yes, I see it now.”

“All of those buildings are actually on an island in the river Seine. In fact, Notre-Dame was built at the same spot where the Romans built a temple to Jupiter. The cathedral was first built in the twelfth century, but through the years, and because of the revolution, it fell into disrepair. If it wasn’t for Victor Hugo and his book, it may have been destroyed.”

“Wow. I didn’t know that.”

“Your room is this way,” he said. “Why don’t you get settled, and then we’ll go exploring?”

“Okay!” He didn’t have to ask me twice. The bedrooms were on the other side of the living room and small kitchen and were larger than I’d expected. “I thought you said this apartment was small.”

He shrugged. “These bedrooms used to be part of another apartment, but I was able to buy it and put in these rooms and bathrooms. You can use that bedroom.” He motioned to the bedroom with billowing curtains framing another open window which looked out over the city. “My housekeeper must have opened the windows to air the place out when she came in this morning.”

It was a little chilly, but I rushed over to look out the windows. The view was breathtaking. “This is perfect!”

“Good,” he said, clearly pleased with my reaction. “I’ll leave you to get settled.”

The door shut behind him, and I glanced around the room. A queen sized bed with a metal frame took up most of the space, and two bed-stands with lamps flanked either side. A large wooden dresser with a mirror stood on the opposite wall.

A door beside the dresser opened into a small bathroom, with the shower and basin all done in beautiful tile work. Fresh towels and soap, along with an array of small bottles of lotions and shampoo, lined the countertop.

This was amazing. I heaved a sigh, happy and grateful I’d come. I could hardly believe I’d almost chickened out. I would have missed this! I hurried back to the bedroom and unloaded my suitcase, placing my toiletries in the bathroom and my clothes in the dresser, then shoved my empty suitcase under the bed.

I quickly changed into a fresh blouse and my favorite black jeans and boots, then hurried into the bathroom to brush my teeth. After combing my hair and updating my make-up, I was ready to go. But first I needed to call Chris. The phone rang for the longest time before he finally picked up.

The first day of spring arrived,
filling me with an overwhelming sense of freedom. Even though the temperature
wasn’t real warm, it meant that winter was officially over. Even better, a ride
on the motorcycle behind Ramos was now a possibility.
I’d missed that and I’d missed
him. He’d been gone for two weeks helping Uncle Joey take care of some
out-of-town business. I wasn’t exactly sure what that entailed and… believe
me, I didn’t want to know. Jackie, Uncle Joey’s secretary and wife, told me
they were both due back in the next few days, and deep down where I didn’t want
to admit it, I could hardly wait to see them again.
That probably made me a bad
person, since I worked for Uncle Joey, and he was a mob-boss. Ramos was his
hit-man and he’d saved my life a few times. I had to admit, it was a far cry
from the first time I’d met Ramos almost a year ago, when he was thinking he
might have to kill me for the big boss.
I’d had to tell Uncle Joey my
secret that I could read minds to stop that from happening. Since then, my
skills had come in handy for Uncle Joey, and gotten me into a lot of trouble.
But he’d always been there to bail me out, both literally and figuratively.
So now I helped Uncle Joey, not
because I was forced into it, but because I wanted to. That was just twisted on
so many levels, and he wasn’t even my real uncle. But I couldn’t seem to stop,
so I did my best to keep on the right side of things.
Ramos was another part of that
story. He was one hot and swoon-worthy man any woman would fall for. I had to
keep reminding myself that I was happily married every time I laid eyes on him.
He was the quintessential bad boy and, like a decadent chocolate dessert with
whipped cream and a cherry on top, something that I might want in the worst
way, but would also be very bad for me.
If I wasn’t married with kids…
well, who knew what could happen, but I loved my husband and children, and
Ramos respected that. Even so, there were still times when my heart seemed to
have a mind of its own around him, and I’d have to rein it in or lose control,
which was not an option.
Only a handful of people knew I
could read minds, and I liked it that way. I told everyone else I had
premonitions, and that mostly worked. I also had my own consulting agency,
which included helping the police along with my own clients. Because of that, I
managed to get into even more trouble, and that wasn’t counting the mob-boss
part.
Like now.
My husband, Chris, had asked for
my help on a hard case. He was an associate partner in the prestigious law firm
of Cohen, Larsen and Pratt. This case was the single most important event of
Chris’ career, mostly because the partners were looking to replace the Cohen
part of the firm, and changing it to Larsen, Pratt and… Nichols.
This was a huge deal, and I
wondered if the fact that Chris handled all of Uncle Joey’s accounts had
something to do with it. Probably, but I wasn’t touching that with a ten foot
pole. This put a lot of pressure on me. Not as much as Chris, but still… I
didn’t want to screw it up for him.
That brought me to my problem. I
wasn’t sure I wanted to help Chris, mostly because he was defending a woman
accused of killing her husband, and ten million dollars from the life insurance
policy was in the balance. To complicate matters even more, the husband’s
company was one of Chris’ biggest clients.
If they won, Chris’ firm would get
a nice, fat share, and also keep the company as a client. But from everything
he’d told me, she sounded guilty as sin. If I listened to her thoughts, I’d know
for sure, and that would just ruin everything. It made me realize that
sometimes my ‘gift’ wasn’t so great. Not when I had to use it to get someone
off who actually deserved some jail time.
But… wasn’t that what I did for
Uncle Joey? So how was this any worse?
In fact, I’d recently made a deal
with a government agent to keep Uncle Joey out of prison. In exchange for my
help on one of his cases, he’d agreed to make any charges against Uncle Joey
disappear. When Uncle Joey found out what I’d done, he wasn’t too happy with
me. Especially since he thought I’d told Blake Beauchaine I could read minds.
Once he knew I hadn’t, and Blake
just wanted me for what he thought were my mad interrogation skills, he’d
calmed down. Still, Uncle Joey told me he could have handled anything Blake
might have thrown at him without my deal. To be honest, it kind of hurt my
feelings. Then he made me promise to involve him if Blake ever came to collect.
So now on top of everything else,
I had Blake’s phone call to look forward to, and Uncle Joey to involve after
that. It was enough to give me an ulcer.
“Shelby? We’re ready for you,”
Chris said, poking his head out of the conference room.

Interview with Colleen Helme, author of Crossing Danger

1. Tell us something about your book. What genre does it belong to? crossing danger

The latest book in my Shelby Nichols Adventure Series is called CROSSING DANGER. It is a mystery with a paranormal twist because the main character, Shelby Nichols, can read minds. As you can imagine, this gets her into all sorts of trouble.

2. Is your book part of a series or can it be read as a stand-alone?

This is the 7th book in the series, but I wanted to make sure that each book is a stand-alone so they each have a beginning, middle and end. I like to think of each book as an episode in the overall series, with the same main characters, but with different plots, places, and people.

3. If you’re not writing, what do you love to do?

Besides reading, I love to go on long bike rides (as long as there aren’t too many hills, hehehe), walks with my dog, and I’ve just picked up a new sport called pickleball – which I love! I also love to do watercolor paintings when I get the chance. Every Sunday night my family gets together to play board and card games and eat popcorn. I also love to watch my favorite TV shows, CASTLE, THE GOOD WIFE, and SUITS.

4. Did anyone inspire you to start writing, if yes, who, or did you always knew you just had to write?

Reading has always been important to me and gave my imagination wings. With stories of my own in my head I decided to learn everything I could about how to write so I could put these stories onto paper in a way that made sense. I took several writing classes and then decided to just go for it. My first efforts were not my best, but I learned how to write by writing. For me it was a process, but one that has been very rewarding.

5. Any advice/tips for newbies?

YES! Learn the craft. Then start with a 20,000 word story and see how it goes. It’s always nice to have a mentor who’s willing to critique your work, the hard part is not letting these critiques get you down, but to learn from them and keep going.

6. Are you already writing a new book? Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Yes! I’m currently writing the next Shelby Nichols Adventure. It’s called DEVIOUS MINDS and so far, things are starting to come together in an exciting way! For this book I actually spent some time in Paris! It was amazing and I got some great ideas.

7. A word that you use way too often? (Mine are “quite” and “probably”)

I’m like you – probably is way up there. I find that if I use a word I like in one sentence, it seems to pop up again in the same paragraph. So, I’m always looking at my thesaurus for a different word that means the same thing so I don’t overuse any one word.

8. When does your book release?

That’s a good one that I don’t have the answer for. I’m hoping for the end of the year, but it all depends on how crazy this adventure gets and how hard I have to work to solve the problems Shelby gets into!

(Note from Emalie: Crossing Danger is already out, it’s Devious Minds dear Colleen is talking about right not 🙂 )

9. Last but not least: What’s your favorite type of candy, if you don’t mind me asking?

My favorite is chocolate covered marshmallow bears. I like to break the chocolate and let it sit so the marshmallow gets a little chewy before I eat it.

Top Ten Of My Auto-buy Authors

If I think about it, I don’t actually have that many auto-buy authors. I’m not even sure I will get to ten authors. So this list will probably be pretty short. Anyway, let’s start 😉

1. Cynthia Eden

I will buy everything immediately, but I still need to catch up on some of her books, since she has soooo many.

So far I’ve only read the Shelby Nichols series, but I’m auto-buying every single book from that series.

……

Ok, guys, I’m done. I can only come up with 7 auto-buy authors, but that’s not automatical a bad thing, right? :/ I love every one of them, that’s for sure! 🙂

Ten Authors I want you to try

Ok, this week’s episode of TTT was a freebie and I’m generally bad at coming up with a theme myself. So Ten Books I Want You To Read was the best thing I could come up with.

1. Carrots by Colleen Helme: I found this book completely by accident. It’s a woman, named Shelby, who was shot in the head and now has the awesome ability to read minds. Also she gets into a lot of dangerous situation and the books are just so funny. And … Ramos is my favourite. He’s just … *sigh*
2. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Found this by accident, too, and I was in love with this after the few first pages. Because, hello? A girl that is a blogger like me (she actually inspired me to start this blog) and hot guys, also … Aliens? Totally sold.
3. My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent: Let me be honest with you, I wasn’t completely sure about this one, but after I’ve read the second one (my edition was a 2-in-1 book) I was hooked and read the whole series in a week.
4. First Grave On The Right by Darynda Jones: I won this book in a giveaway and I loved it. Charley, the main character, is my favourite kind of character. She’s sarcastic, funny, can see ghosts and she has this weird habit of naming her furniture.
5. Last Wolf Standing by Rhyannon Byrd: I actually started with the fourth book in series, but I liked it so much, I just had to read the other ones, too. Because, come on! Hot male alphas and women, who won’t take the shit the guys through on them.
6. Hotter After Midnight by Cynthia Eden: It was the every first book by Cynthia Eden I’ve read and every other book by her was just as good.
7. Show No Mercy by Cindy Gerard: I have this weird obsession with Black Ops guys and if you love action-filled books with a romance try it.
8. One Night Of Sin by Elle Kennedy: Hot MMA-fighter who liked to talk dirty, what else to say?

I just noticed I forget my two favourite of all time authors! Bad me.

9. Slave To Sensation by Nalini Singh: I love the world-building, the characters, the humor, just everything.
10. Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall: The characters are just like a big family. Love them all to death.

Bout Of Books Read-A-Thon Challenge 1

Day #1: Challenge by Writing My Own Fairytale

Bookish Survey

1. How do you organize your shelves?

What do you mean by organize them?! Like actually putting them neatly and in the right order onto my shelf… is that even possible?! So my answer is: I don’t do that. Nope.

FYI my Kindle is organized 😉

2. What is one of your favorite book that’s not in one of your favorite genres?

Agnes and The Hitman by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer. I would put this into Chick-Lit which is normally totally not my genre, but I really, really love this book. It’s just so funny and I love the chaos around the main character. Also hot hitman!

3. What is the last 5 star book you read?

That would be Twisted By Cynthia Eden. You can check out my review here 🙂

4. What book are you most excited to read during the read-a-thon?

I’m excited about all the books I chose, otherwise I wouldn’t read them, duh! But I’m going to just pick Crossing Danger by Colleen Helme.

5. What book do you recommend the most?

Try anything by Jennifer L. Armentrout (if you like YA) or Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall (if you like vamps)
