ABOUT THE BOOK

The Segonian
Book #2 Aldebarian Alliance
By Dianne Duvall

Releasing date: January 19, 2021

Eliana’s life has never been what one might term ordinary. At least, it hasn’t been for a very long time. As a powerful Immortal Guardian, she spends her nights hunting and slaying psychotic vampires that most of humanity doesn’t even realize exist. Then an opportunity arises that instantly makes her extraordinary existence seem downright boring. The leader of the Immortal Guardians asks her to guard a group of mortals who are embarking upon a voyage across the galaxy to the planet Lasaran. How could she possibly say no?

In no time at all, Eliana is hurtling through space on board a Lasaran battleship and getting to know not one but two alien races. It’s the most exciting adventure of her long life… until the ship is unexpectedly attacked. Amid the chaos and destruction that follow, she valiantly helps everyone she can before an explosion renders her unconscious. When Eliana awakens, she finds herself alone, floating in space, clad only in a spacesuit, with no ship in sight. Alone—that is—except for the warm, deep voice that carries over the comm in her helmet.

Commander Dagon and the crew of the Segonian battleship Ranasura respond to a distress call from their Lasaran allies and join a massive Alliance-wide search-and-rescue mission. He quickly achieves communication with a lone Earthling female and races toward her. Every time they speak, his fascination with her grows and he becomes more desperate to reach her before her oxygen supply runs out. Her strength, bravery, and humor entice him, even more so when she defies all odds and they meet in person.

As he and Eliana embark upon a quest to find her missing friends, a bond swiftly grows between them that deepens with every laugh and smile and tender touch they share. But they are not the only ones searching for Earthling survivors. When Eliana herself becomes the hunted and their enemies begin to close in, can the two of them fight their way to victory, or will their enemies take everything?

Excerpt

Eliana burst into the armorers’ workroom and skidded to a halt.

Heads jerked up. Gazes latched onto them.

Beside her, Dagon chuckled.

Her heart pounded wildly against her rib cage as she looked up at him. And it wasn’t a result of their brisk walk. He was so damned handsome… especially while he wore the boyish grin their unofficial race had spawned.

“You appear to love weapons as much as I do,” he said, his eyes sparkling with mirth.

She grinned. “If that’s true, then you love them a hell of a lot.” Turning to the men who were seated at stations, repairing or cleaning weapons, she tossed them a wave. “Hi, guys! How’s it going?”

They looked at each other.

“How is what going?” one asked.

She shrugged. “Your day. Your work shift. Life. I don’t know. You choose.”

He nodded. “All is going well, ni’má.”

“Happy to hear it.” She turned to face the design area and—as eager as a child on Christmas morning—skipped over to the chief weapons designer. “Jor-al,” she sang.

Joral turned.

“Dagon said you have some goodies for me.”

He smiled as she approached. “Indeed I do, Eliana.” Reaching beneath a counter, he collected what reminded her a little of an area rug that had been rolled up. Placing it atop his design table, he unrolled the fabric.

A dozen throwing stars came into view first, glinting in the overhead light. He revealed two sheathed daggers next, then a pair of shoto swords, a couple of sais with grips that would fit her hands perfectly, and not one but two katanas.

“Ooooooh,” she breathed reverently, her fingers itching to grab them. She had expected one or two weapons, not all of them. How the hell had he finished this many so quickly?

She dragged her gaze away from the gleaming metal and looked up at Joral. “You crafted them all from mlathnon or alavinin?” Though she had dedicated much of the day to swiftly learning the Segonian language, she was pretty sure she slaughtered the pronunciation of both metals.

“Yes, ni’má. Every blade you see here can repel blasterfire.” The slightest shake of his head indicated he still thought her batty for believing she could fight off someone with an energy blaster while armed only with blades.

Eliana grinned. “Excellent.” She motioned to the pretties. “May I . . . ?”

“Of course.”

She reached for a katana first. In the tight confines of a spaceship’s hallway, the katana might not be the best tool to use, but it had been her weapon of choice ever since Seth had given her one shortly after her transformation.

Eliana held the weapon in both hands, admiring the workmanship Joral had put into the scabbard, the cord wrapped around the handle, the engravings on the guard, the blade collar . . . She slid him a look. “You’re good.” He had reproduced her design perfectly.

Crossing his arms over his broad chest, he arched a brow. “I’m better than good.”

She smiled. “Let’s see, shall we?” Curling her fingers around the handle, she slowly drew the blade from its sheath.

When Dagon held out a hand, she passed him the scabbard.

Eliana held the sword horizontal to the floor and rested it upon the index finger of her free hand, shifting it until she found the balance point several inches distant from the guard. She nodded approvingly. “This sword has good cutting power.” The farther the balance point from the guard, the stronger the cutting power. And any sword wielded with preternatural strength needed that.

“Every blade I craft has good cutting power,” Joral stated with unabashed pride.

“I can believe that.” She had wielded many swords over the centuries and knew quality when she saw and felt it.

Glancing behind her, she backed away until she stood in a large bare area, then tossed the blade into the air. The sword came close to striking the high ceiling before the ship’s artificial gravity drew it down again. As soon as the handle was in reach, she gripped it and started swinging. Familiar whooshing sounds filled the silent room as she swung the sword as if she battled multiple vampire foes. Though she carefully refrained from using her phenomenal speed, the blade still blurred as she spun and thrust and slashed at imaginary enemies in front of and behind her, twisting and ducking as though they fought back.

By the time she finished with a flourish, she was grinning big. It felt exactly like the katana she had lost in the battle with the Gathendiens, like an old friend with whom Joral had reunited her.

“I love it!” she proclaimed as she looked up from the blade.

Every man in the room stared at her, the workers with wide eyes, Joral with his arms now at his sides and a smile creasing his craggy features, and Dagon with obvious admiration . . . and something else.

Desire, perhaps?

Or was that merely wishful thinking? Because she sure as hell desired him.

Joral broke the silence. “You’re good.”

She grinned. “I’m better than good.”

Barking out a laugh, he shook his head. “I believe you.

By Dianne Duvall

June 16, 2020

Delve into an exciting new stand-alone novel in New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall’s “fast-paced and humorous” (Publishers Weekly), “utterly addictive” (RT Book Reviews) Immortal Guardians series.

Nick Belanger can’t stop thinking about the single mother who lives next door. She’s smart. She’s funny. She’s so beautiful he can’t stare at her too long for fear his eyes will start to glow. But Kayla thinks he’s just an ordinary guy who works in security. Finding out he instead is a powerful immortal warrior who hunts and slays psychotic vampires for a living may not go over well, particularly since she has a daughter she doesn’t want to endanger.

Kayla Dorman can keep neither her gaze nor her thoughts from straying to the man next door. Who can blame her really? He is the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome with smart, charming, and honorable thrown in. He’s also a few years younger than her and surely would not be interested in a single mom who hasn’t dated since her divorce. At least that’s what she thinks until an accident nearly takes her life and Nick risks all to save her.

The dynamics of their relationship swiftly change. The friendship they’ve developed over the years deepens into love as the two spend every minute they can together, laughing and teasing, never suspecting a threat may lurk in the shadows. But that threat soon strikes, making it clear that Nick is the target and his enemy doesn’t care if Kayla gets caught in the cross fire. Though Kayla bravely rises to the occasion and is determined to do whatever it takes to help Nick defeat his enemy, Nick is terrified of losing her. Can he identify and eliminate his new nemesis before the man takes everything from him?

5 Fun Facts About Dianne Duvall

Hello! Thank you for joining us and helping us celebrate the release of The Lasaran, the first book in my new Aldebarian Alliance series. If you like sci-fi and paranormal romance that includes strong heroes who adore strong women and lots of action, passion, humor, and happily-ever-afters, then I hope you’ll pick up a copy.

Since I love getting to know fellow booklovers, I thought it would be fun to share 5 fun facts about me:

1

When I’m at the dentist, leaning back in the chair and having my teeth cleaned, I stare up at the ceiling and imagine one of the tiles slowly, stealthily sliding back to reveal… a wide, wild arrange of things. All kinds of chaos has erupted in that office in my imagination. And for the Immortal Guardians fans out there, yes, some of it was kicked off by Sheldon.

2

I once played a zombie (as an extra) in a short independent horror film. I was actually the special effects makeup artist for the film and made “my own entrails” fall out. LOL

3

Though I’m only 5’1”, I’m a pretty good free throw shooter. LOL. I remember one time when I was in college… I was in the gym, waiting for my aerobics class to begin and got bored, so I picked up a basketball someone had left behind and started shooting from the free throw line. By the time I hit a dozen free throws in a row, every guy in the gym had stopped what he was doing and started clapping and cheering me on. They were all humorously amazed.

4

I recently discovered the audiobooks based on the Alien film series. And though I prefer to have romance mixed into my sci-fi, I’m really enjoying these. I don’t know why Hollywood hasn’t made them into movies! They’re really entertaining.

5

I love to make people laugh, which is probably why humor always seems to find its way into my books, no matter how dark or dire circumstances become. Laughter and teasing have always been a big part of my life and have certainly help me through tough times, so I always grin big when a reader mentions getting odd looks when she or he bursts out laughing while reading one of my books.

So . . . in the interest of getting to know each other, tell me one fun fact about you.

review

Have you ever opened a highly anticipated book and hesitated a moment when you hit the table of contents. Thinking to yourself “what if it disappoints me. What then?”. Of course, in hindsight that fear was totally uncalled for and totally irrational.

Death of Darkness was – for the lack of a better word to convey my feelings – AWESOME! (yes, in capital letters).

I cried, laughed, cried some more, was shocked to my core, did I mention the crying?

I’m not even sure why I cried that much. Death of Darkness isn’t that sad. Sure, it has its sad moments, but overall it’s quite funny and I’m usually not a crier. Maybe it was because I was exhausted as I read the book till 5:30am and had to wake up two hours later. Maybe I was crying for my lack of upcoming sleep and the fact that the first thing I had in the morning was math. Math on a sleep deprived brain is not a good combination, let me tell you. I nearly fell asleep in class.

I originally had 2.5 hours of sleep available but I had to reminisce a bit more in the feeling of having read a fantastic book. So it shrunk to only 2 hours. Whoops.

Anyway, Death of Darkness not only met my expectations. It exceeded them by far. I’m even going so far to name it my favourite book of 2019, even though I’m still waiting for some releases in these last few month of 2019. It definitely takes the top.

The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat (maybe I should said on the edge of my bed? As that is were I read) Normally I’m mostly able to guess what twist will accure in a book but Death of Darkness kept me guessing and I loved that.

Did I mention that this – do I dare call it masterpiece? Yes, I do – is 600+ pages long and it did absolutely not feel like it. I’m actually quite impressed with myself that I finished the book in five and a half hours.

Dianne Duvall did Seth justice. Many questions, we as the readers had, were answered. Also I absolutely loved and adored Leah. Her brand of humor was on-point.

I loved to see more Zach and Seth interaction. I always loved those two together and I have to apologize to Zach, because he now has to share his number one spot with Seth. I’m totally allowed to love both, right?

The one thing I have in mind now is that Dianne Duvall set the bar for herself and her next book quite high. I’m quite curious to see who the next book will be about.

Also can we talk about that mini cliffhanger. That was mean, Dianne! Really, really mean. I’m giving you the stink eye right now. Lol

Did I also mentioned I just bought the audio book version as well? That says a lot about my love for this book, because I find English audio books sometimes hard to listen to and usually only buy my absolute favourite books in English (if they are not available as German audio books).

Now the only thing I have to decide is whether I reread it again today, start listening to the audio book, take some nap time or learn for my upcoming exams. The struggle is real, folks.

Also here is my favourite quote, which makes absolutely no sense without context. Just know that it made me laugh hard. So enjoy 🙂

“Well then, boys, you’d better put your rain boots on. Because monsoon season is coming.”

About the book

(Immortal Guardians #8)
by Dianne Duvall

ebook
Publication Date: July 10th 2018

He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.

When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.

review

Awaken the Darkness is the eighth book of the Immortal Guardians series – which is one of my favourite series by the way. Originally is was supposed to be a novella, but since Dianne Duvall is now a self-publishing author (good for you, Dianne!) it magically ended up being much longer *cough* 400 pages *cough* and I’m absolutely not mad about it. The only way you feel that this was supposed to be a novella is in the way that not as many side characters as in the other books are present and we don’t have the Gershom story arc. Apart from that you really can’t feel that this was supposed to be much shorter.

I really loved the story of Stan and Susan. Stan was the perfect gentleman even though he was riddled with wounds (where do I find such specimen for myself?) and Susan was awesome, just as awesome as all the other female characters Dianne Duvall creates.

The whole story was fun and I loved the scene when Stan was finally reunited with his Immortal Guardian bethrens.

You know one thing I would like to see in the Immortal Guardians world? Even though it will probably never happen, like never never… I would love to see an M/M story, preferably between David and Darnell, but that’s probably just my M/M infested brain talking. LOL. I would buy the shit up of it though, just saying 😉 I love me some friends-to-lover M/M story. Hint, hint, Dianne.

Anyway, where was I? Right, Awaken the Darkness. Buy it, read it, love it! That’s my advice for you.

And if you haven’t started this series yet, start at the beginning, it’s awesome, trust me.

Also I absolutely can’t wait for Seth’s book, which is set to come out in 2019. The only thing I hope about this book is that he doesn’t end up with a reincarnated version of his wife, I don’t like the whole reincarnation theme. Let him end up with someone totally new, but we will see what Dianne Duvall has in store for us. Now if only I could muster some patience, it truly was never my strong suit.

It’s not 2019 yet, right? Damn…

Awaken the Darkness
(Immortal Guardians #8)
by Dianne Duvall
Kindle Edition, 414 pages
Publication: July 10th 2018 by Dianne Duvall

Return to the “utterly addictive” (RT Book Reviews), “fast-paced and humorous” (Publishers Weekly) world of New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians.

EXCERPT

She returned her gaze to the dirt. What was down there?

Curiosity seized Susan once more. Jax, too.

As the beagle jumped down into the hole, she reached for the shovel.

A deep voice, full of pain and carrying a… Russian?… accent, filled her head. Careful. Please.

It should concern her. Should actually send her fleeing up the stairs and out of the house. But it didn’t. She had to know what was down there. The curiosity was killing her!

Gingerly, she poked at the dirt with the shovel.

Jax’s claws caught in something just under the surface.

Kneeling, Susan set the shovel aside and reached out to explore Jax’s find.

Something rubbery, with a texture similar to a car tire. Weird.

But very intriguing.

Forgoing the shovel, she shooed Jax back and began to scoop the dirt away with her hands. More rubber. Rounded. Sliced and torn in places. Definitely not a tire. It was more like a rubber cover encasing something solid that gave a little when she tested it. Some of the dirt she scraped away from it was rust colored.

Her heart leapt as her fingers brushed something different. Something harder. She could feel the outline of it beneath the loosened soil and—

Oh sh**.” It was a man’s boot.

Keep going, that mysterious voice whispered. Don’t stop.

It compelled her as much as the curiosity riding her did.

Why the hell am I doing this, Jax?” she murmured, uncovering another boot beneath the first.

Jax leapt out of the hole.

Great,” she muttered. “You started this. Now you’re going to abandon me?”

But he didn’t. The faithful beagle stood above her, tail wagging wildly, making happy little whining sounds as he watched her.

Susan continued to scoop dirt away.

Legs came into view. The odd rubber that encased them looked as though someone had peppered it with buckshot or something. Lots of ragged tears and holes she couldn’t see into for the dirt that had settled in them.

Then a hip. A man lying on his side?

Fear struck, almost instantly obliterated by that strange calm and inexplicably intense curiosity.

Mannequin, the voice whispered in her head.

Doubt rose, again vanishing as eagerness replaced it. She had to see what else the dirt concealed.

A narrow waist. An arm drawn up over a head, concealing a face.

Please let this be a mannequin or some bizarre art project abandoned by the previous owner,” she murmured.

Why the hell was she even still digging? Why was common freaking sense not kicking curiosity’s ass and hightailing her out of there?

Because you have to know, that deep voice murmured. You need to know.

I do,” she agreed. “I need to know.”

Her fingers tangled in soft hair.

She stilled, rubbing the short dusty tresses between her fingers until the midnight color was revealed. Flying into motion, she brushed dirt away from the head those soft strands hid. Careful, but urgent, her heart slamming against her ribs.

Breathing heavily, she sat back on her heels and stared down with utter amazement at the treasure she had uncovered.

A man—a very tall man—lay curled on his left side, facing her, his right arm drawn up over his face, a large hand sporting numerous lacerations shielding his head.

He was thin. So thin as to be almost skeletal. But his skin…

It didn’t look leathery or decayed or mummified.

Nor did it appear to be plastic. This was no mannequin.

So why wasn’t she afraid? She should be very afraid. She should be shaking in her proverbial boots right now.

Cautiously, she grasped his wrist and lifted the arm a couple of inches, slowly drawing it down away from his face.

Oh no,” she breathed. Lowering his arm to his side, she leaned in close and brushed his dark hair back from his dusty face. “What did they do to you?” she whispered.

He was handsome… or would’ve been were it not for the wounds that scored his compelling features. His eyes were closed, his brow furrowed as though he still suffered. His ears had bled, as had his nose. His cheeks, coated with perhaps a week’s worth of dark stubble, were sunken and marred by so many deep gashes and scratches. What had happened to him?

Tears welled in her eyes.

How long had he been buried there? She glanced down his long length. And how had he remained so well preserved? As though he had just lain down and breathed his last breath five minutes ago?

She returned her attention to his face, drew her fingers across his forehead, carefully avoiding the jagged line carved into it.

His skin was gritty from the dirt. Cool to the touch.

She shook her head. “What did they do to you?” she whispered again.

One of his eyelids lifted.

She sucked in a breath.

His brown eye blinked, then focused on her.

Amber light flashed in it.

The fear that she should have been feeling all this time now struck with a vengeance.

Her heart doing its damnedest to burst from her chest, she yanked her fingers back and tried to scoot away.

His hand shot out and clamped around her wrist, preventing her from withdrawing.

Oh sh**!” she cried, struggling to free herself from his hold while Jax began to bark.
