About the book

Death of Darkness
(Immortal Guardians #9)
by Dianne Duvall

ebook
Publication Date: August 20th 2019

Seth has led the Immortal Guardians for thousands of years. With them fighting by his side, he has protected humans from psychotic vampires, defeated corrupt mercenary armies, defended military bases under attack, and more. But the latest enemy to rise against the Immortal Guardians has proven to be a formidable one, wielding almost as much power as Seth. His goal is simple. He wants to watch the world burn. And he will use every means at his disposal to accomplish it. Seth and his Immortal Guardians have succeeded thus far in staving off Armageddon despite heartbreaking losses. But they have never before faced such danger. Seth has only one wish: to protect his Immortal Guardians family and ensure the continuation of humanity by defeating his foe. But then Leah walks into his life and sparks a new desire.

Leah Somerson has suffered losses of her own. It has taken her a long time to rebuild her life and find some semblance of peace. Then one night a tall, dark, powerful immortal with what appears to be the weight of the world on his shoulders stumbles into her shop, and everything changes. Peace and contentment are no longer enough. Now she wants more. She wants to find happiness. She wants to erase the darkness in Seth’s eyes and replace it with love and laughter. She knows he’s different in ways that make most fear him. Even some of his immortal brethren keep a careful distance. But Leah will not. Nor will she shy away when danger strikes.

review

Have you ever opened a highly anticipated book and hesitated a moment when you hit the table of contents. Thinking to yourself “what if it disappoints me. What then?”. Of course, in hindsight that fear was totally uncalled for and totally irrational.

Death of Darkness was – for the lack of a better word to convey my feelings – AWESOME! (yes, in capital letters).

I cried, laughed, cried some more, was shocked to my core, did I mention the crying?

I’m not even sure why I cried that much. Death of Darkness isn’t that sad. Sure, it has its sad moments, but overall it’s quite funny and I’m usually not a crier. Maybe it was because I was exhausted as I read the book till 5:30am and had to wake up two hours later. Maybe I was crying for my lack of upcoming sleep and the fact that the first thing I had in the morning was math. Math on a sleep deprived brain is not a good combination, let me tell you. I nearly fell asleep in class.

I originally had 2.5 hours of sleep available but I had to reminisce a bit more in the feeling of having read a fantastic book. So it shrunk to only 2 hours. Whoops.

Anyway, Death of Darkness not only met my expectations. It exceeded them by far. I’m even going so far to name it my favourite book of 2019, even though I’m still waiting for some releases in these last few month of 2019. It definitely takes the top.

The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat (maybe I should said on the edge of my bed? As that is were I read) Normally I’m mostly able to guess what twist will accure in a book but Death of Darkness kept me guessing and I loved that.

Did I mention that this – do I dare call it masterpiece? Yes, I do – is 600+ pages long and it did absolutely not feel like it. I’m actually quite impressed with myself that I finished the book in five and a half hours.

Dianne Duvall did Seth justice. Many questions, we as the readers had, were answered. Also I absolutely loved and adored Leah. Her brand of humor was on-point.

I loved to see more Zach and Seth interaction. I always loved those two together and I have to apologize to Zach, because he now has to share his number one spot with Seth. I’m totally allowed to love both, right?

The one thing I have in mind now is that Dianne Duvall set the bar for herself and her next book quite high. I’m quite curious to see who the next book will be about.

Also can we talk about that mini cliffhanger. That was mean, Dianne! Really, really mean. I’m giving you the stink eye right now. Lol

Did I also mentioned I just bought the audio book version as well? That says a lot about my love for this book, because I find English audio books sometimes hard to listen to and usually only buy my absolute favourite books in English (if they are not available as German audio books).

Now the only thing I have to decide is whether I reread it again today, start listening to the audio book, take some nap time or learn for my upcoming exams. The struggle is real, folks.

Also here is my favourite quote, which makes absolutely no sense without context. Just know that it made me laugh hard. So enjoy 🙂

“Well then, boys, you’d better put your rain boots on. Because monsoon season is coming.”

Mini Reviews #8

The Marked Prince by M.A. Grant (review copy provided by NetGalley)

Color me surprised, but the first book apparently wasn’t a fluke for me, because I liked The Marked Prince just as much and I’m pretty such I still dislike fae themes in other books.

It looks like it is just this series that is the exception and I really don’t know why. Still I really liked The Marked Prince. It was different and kind of dark. I felt that the ending was a bit rushed compared to the pacing of the rest of the book but I at the same time I was kept on my toes while reading it, always wondering if the scene I’m reading at the moment would be the scene where Seb would finally find out the truth.

I will definitely pick up the third book of the series as well, which according to Goodreads is namen The Iron Crown, and I’m quite curious who this book will be about.

Vampire with benefits by E.J. Russell (review copy provided by NetGalley)

I read Vampire with Benefits right after Single White Incubus as I was approved for both of them on NetGalley and while I reviewed the Single White Incubus, I never got around to reviewing this book. Normally I love the fake boyfriend trope and vampire-shifter relationships as well, it’s just that I wasn’t totally a fan of the story overall and I didn’t like the ending. When I compare this with Single White Incubus Vampire with Benefits definitely fell through, the first book was more my style, maybe because vamp-shifter stories are plenty out there but not many incubus stories.
I still liked it enough to finish it though, there were quite some humourous scenes and I liked Rusty and Cas.

Game Changer by Rachel Reid (Review Copy provided by NetGalley)

After reading the second book of the series recently (which I loved), and not making the connection that Game Changer is the first book in the same series until the very end, I decided to give Game Changer another chance. I actually dnf-ed Game Changer the first time. Back then I wasn’t exactly sure why, but during my second read I figured out the why. It was too sweet and too fast for me and I hated the constant sex scenes. I started skipping them, both times. I usually love all ice hockey stories, because I’m just a sucker for them, but I think in this instance it was a “it’s me, not you”-type of situation. The later half of the book was better than the first half though and the second time around I actually finished it, that does count for something, right?

Mini Reviews #9

Arctic Sun by Annabeth Albert

I tried reading this when I got approved by NetGalley month ago, but I somehow wasn’t in the mood for it, because I put it aside to read something else and apparently never picked it up again. I made up for that by giving it another try today.

But I still wasn’t satisfied by it. The pacing was off – I never thought I would say this, but it was too slow for me -, I felt no chemistry between River and Griffin whatsoever and while I’m normally a big fan of angsty books, this one didn’t do it for me. I liked that the characters weren’t perfect, but they were so damn insecure. It was driving me mad.

I don’t really know why I didn’t like this book. I’ve read probably 15 books by Annabeth Albert prior to Arctic Sun and I enjoyed them all in various degrees, but most of them I rated quite high, none got a 2 star rating though. Arctic Sun is going to get that and be the first Annabeth Albert book that gets one from me. I’m not sure if I will pick up another book of this series. Probably not, maybe Annabeth Albert and I are meant to go our separate ways now, after her books slowly declined for me the more I’ve read. We’ll see.

Hard Truths by Alex Whitehall

I stumbled over this book on Amazon and it sounded weirdly familiar, so I checked goodreads if I had already read it. No. But it was on my ARC shelf. Apparently I requested this book on NetGalley ages ago, got approved, put the book in my arc folder on my kindle and promptly forgot about it. I finally read it through and I really liked it. The two things that bothered me were the fact that they said “I love you” way too early for my taste – they were dating for two month, but on page we only saw the first two dates, so it felt kind of rushed, even though it wasn’t really – and that immature conflict at the end. That didn’t really do anything for the book, in my opinion. I just pissed me off a little bit. I totally wanted to give Isaac a big long hug after what happened with his parents.
Usually I enjoy my books with a dual first person POV, but wasn’t mad that in this instance it was just a single POV of Isaac’s.

Riot by Tillie Cole

To this date I don’t know what possessed me to request this one on NetGalley. I liked the first book in the series decently enough but quit reading the second one half-way through. I think I requested this way back then, because I was curious about 152 and 901. While I finally read this though, I remembered why I quit reading Reap, because this isn’t really my genre. It’s too crazy, too dark and too violent for me.

So I gave it a try, because I did request it, so I still owe the review for this and I got to about 30%. After that I just couldn’t take it anymore. I won’t rate this book because this is a clear case of “it’s me, not you”. I’m sure lots of people that like this genre, loved this book. It just missed its mark with me. I’m sorry.
